SARS-CoV-2 Infection and New-Onset Type 2 Diabetes Among Pediatric Patients, 2020 to 2022

A study found that children who contracted COVID-19 have a 55% to 58% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes within 6 months vs those with other respiratory infections. This highlights the health impacts of COVID-19 on children.

It was,however, a retrospective analysis from medical records with no cause effect relationship, and is subject to the usual biases.

An equally plausible explanation is that covid uncovered T2DM and/or more symptoms occurred in those predisposed (e.g. obese) prompting medical attention.
