Potential Role of Gut Microbiota in Traditional Chinese Medicine against COVID-19

In this review, we mainly discussed the relationship between COVID-19 and gut microbiota (GM), as well as the possible impact of TCM combined with western medication on GM in the treatment of COVID-19 patients, aiming to provide references for the possible role of GM in TCM against COVID-19. The available data suggest that GM dysbiosis did occur in COVID-19 patients, and the intervention of GM could ameliorate the clinical condition of COVID-19 patients. In addition, TCMs (e.g., Jinhua Qinggan granule, Lianhua Qingwen capsule, Qingfei Paidu decoction, Shufeng Jiedu capsule, Qingjin Jianghuo decoction, Toujie Quwen granules, and MaxingShigan) have been proven to be safe and effective for the treatment of COVID-19 in Chinese clinic. Among them, Ephedra sinica, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Bupleurum chinense, Lonicera japonica,Scutellaria baicalensi, and Astragalus membranaceus are common herbs and have a certain regulation on GM, immunity, and angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). Notably, Qingfei Paidu decoction and MaxingShigan have been demonstrated to modulate GM. Finally, the hypothesis of GM-mediated TCM treatment of COVID-19 is proposed, and more clinical trials and basic experiments need to be initiated to confirm this hypothesis.

Progress of traditional chinese medicine treating COVID-19

The new coronavirus pneumonia (coronavirus disease 2019 [COVID-19]), caused by the new coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS-CoV-2]), mainly manifests by fever, dry cough, and fatigue. The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 poses a huge threat to people’s lives. Unfortunately, so far, there are no effective treatment drugs and vaccines. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has played an important role and achieved good results for treating this epidemic. More than 85% of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection in China have received TCM treatment. In this article, we describe the progress of TCM for the COVID-19 therapy…

Current Global Status and Future Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Prevention and Treatment of Coronavirus Disease 2019

TCM has been assimilated into hospitals in China, providing Integrative Chinese-Western Medicine (ICWM) treatment in both outpatient and inpatient settings.[16] Early integration of TCM was evident from the China national guideline that was released in January 2020,[14] which already recommended the usage of TCM for COVID‐19. More than 90% of confirmed cases received TCM,[17] which may have contributed to Status and future of TCM in managing COVID‐19 the relatively lower mortality rate (about 4%) in China.[18] Recognizing the potential of TCM in preventing and treating COVID-19, we herein discuss the current global use of TCM, its challenges and strategies in addressing COVID-19, and future directions in this area…

Combating COVID-19 with integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine in China

COVID-19, an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has spread throughout the world. China has achieved rapid containment of this highly infectious disease following the principles of early detection, early quarantine and early treatment with integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. The inclusion of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the Chinese protocol is based on its successful historic experience in fighting against pestilence. Current findings have shown that the Chinese medicine can reduce the incidence of severe or critical events, improve clinical recovery and help alleviate symptoms such as cough or fever. To date there are over 133 ongoing registered clinical studies on TCM/integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. The three Chinese patent medicines (Lianhua Qingwen Keli/Jiaonang (Forsythiae and Honeysuckle Flower Pestilence-Clearing Granules/Capsules), Jinhua Qinggan Keli (Honeysuckle Flower Cold-Relieving Granules) and Xuebijing (Stasis-Resolving & Toxin-Removing) Injection were officially approved by the National Medical Products Administration to list COVID-19 as an additional indication. The pharmacological studies have suggested that Chinese medicine is effective for COVID-19 probably through its host-directed regulation and certain antiviral effects…
