The potential insights of Traditional Chinese Medicine on treatment of COVID-19

Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID‐19) broke out in 2019 and spread rapidly around the world. There is still no specific antiviral therapy to the current pandemic. In China, historical records show that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is effective in prevention and enhancing the resistance to pandemic with unique insights. To fight with COVID‐19, National Health and Commission of PRC has recommended some TCM in the guideline, such as HuoxiangZhengqi, LianhuaQingwen ShufengJiedu and XueBijing, and actually displayed a remarkable effect in clinical treatment strate‐ gic for COVID‐19. We review studies to provide an in‐depth understanding into the effect of TCM, and also introduce the possible mechanism involved in COVID‐19 treatment.

Network pharmacology suggests biochemical rationale for treating COVID-19 symptoms with a Traditional Chinese Medicine

Chinese herbal formulas including the lung-cleaning and toxicity-excluding (LCTE) soup have played an important role in treating the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (caused by SARS-CoV- 2) in China. Applying LCTE outside of China may prove challenging due to the unfamiliar rationale behind its application in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine. To overcome this barrier, a biochemical understanding of the clinical effects of LCTE is needed. Here, we explore the chemical compounds present in the reported LCTE ingredients and the proteins targeted by these compounds via a network pharmacology analysis…

The direct evidence and mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine treatment of COVID-19

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the third coronavirus causing serious human disease to spread across the world in the past 20 years, after SARS and Middle East respiratory syndrome. As of mid-September 2020, more than 200 countries and territories have reported 30 million cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2, including 950,000 deaths. Supportive treatment remains the mainstay of therapy for COVID-19. The World Health Organization reported that four candidate drugs, including remdesivir, are ineffective or have little effect on COVID-19. According to China News, 90 % of Chinese patients with COVID-19 use traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), with an effectiveness rate of 80 %, and no deterioration in patient condition. We have compiled the direct evidence of TCM treatment for COVID-19 as of December 31, 2020. We describe the advantages of TCM in the treatment of COVID-19 based on clinical evidence and the required methods for its clinical use. TCM can inhibit virus replication and transcription, prevent the combination of SARS-CoV-2 and the host, and attenuate the cytokine storm and immune deficiency caused by the virus infection. The cooperation of many countries is required to establish international guidelines regarding the use of TCM in patients with severe COVID-19 from other regions and of different ethnicities. Studies on the psychological abnormalities in patients with COVID-19, and medical staff, is lacking; it is necessary to provide a complete chain of evidence to determine the efficacy of TCM in the related prevention, treatment, and recovery. This study aims to provide a reference for the rational use of TCM in the treatment of COVID-19.

Anti-COVID-19 drug screening: Frontier concepts and core technologies

This paper thoroughly summarizes interdisciplinary notions and tech- niques, including disease model, biochip, network pharmacology, and molecular docking technology, etc., providing a reference for researchers in the screening of drugs for COVID-19 prevention and treatment. These methodologies may facilitate researchers to screen out more potential drugs for treating COVID-19 pneumonia and to tackle this global crisis…

Progress of traditional chinese medicine treating COVID-19

The new coronavirus pneumonia (coronavirus disease 2019 [COVID-19]), caused by the new coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS-CoV-2]), mainly manifests by fever, dry cough, and fatigue. The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 poses a huge threat to people’s lives. Unfortunately, so far, there are no effective treatment drugs and vaccines. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has played an important role and achieved good results for treating this epidemic. More than 85% of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection in China have received TCM treatment. In this article, we describe the progress of TCM for the COVID-19 therapy…

Current Global Status and Future Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Prevention and Treatment of Coronavirus Disease 2019

TCM has been assimilated into hospitals in China, providing Integrative Chinese-Western Medicine (ICWM) treatment in both outpatient and inpatient settings.[16] Early integration of TCM was evident from the China national guideline that was released in January 2020,[14] which already recommended the usage of TCM for COVID‐19. More than 90% of confirmed cases received TCM,[17] which may have contributed to Status and future of TCM in managing COVID‐19 the relatively lower mortality rate (about 4%) in China.[18] Recognizing the potential of TCM in preventing and treating COVID-19, we herein discuss the current global use of TCM, its challenges and strategies in addressing COVID-19, and future directions in this area…

The three syndromes and six Chinese patent medicine study during the recovery phase of COVID-19

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), first broke out in Wuhan, China, in 2019. SARS-CoV-2 develops many types of mutations (such as B.1.1.7), making diagnosis and treatment challenging. Although we now have a preliminary understanding of COVID-19, including pathological changes, clinical manifestations, and treatment measures, we also face new difficulties. The biggest problem is that most COVID-19 patients might face sequelae (e.g., fatigue, sleep disturbance, pulmonary fibrosis) during the recovery phase. We aimed to test six Chinese patent medicines to treat three major abnormal symptoms in COVID-19 patients during the recovery phase, including cardiopulmonary function, sleep disturbance, and digestive function. We launched the “three syndromes and six Chinese patent medicines” randomized, double-blind, placebo- controlled, multicenter clinical trial on April 10, 2020…

A Temporizing Solution to “Artemisinin Resistance”

Antimalarial drug resistance has arisen frequently in the past, causing familiar treatment regimens to fail, with sometimes devastating consequences. Resis- tance has eventually been man- aged when new treatments have been developed, but drug discov- ery is a painstaking process that takes decades of effort and considerable investment…
