Hormone receptor–positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2–negative (HR-positive/HER2-negative) is the most common breast cancer subtype. However, mortality data collected from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) between 1975 and 2020 indicated that the best survival pattern is observed among patients with HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer. This is followed by the HR-positive/HER2-positive subtype, and then by the HR-negative/HER2-positive subtype. The HR-negative/HER2-negative subtype, also known as triple-negative breast cancer, generally has the worst survival pattern. Although patients with HR-positive/HER2-negative generally have a better prognosis, stage of diagnosis and treatment play an important role.
