Steroids may weaken the immune system, allowing harmful bacteria to grow in severe COVID-19. Monitoring the lungs and immune system using advanced techniques could help diagnose and manage 2°BP earlier.

Immune system of 2°BP patients showed lower activity of an important defense pathway (TNFα).

Patients with 2°BP had higher risk of dying and were more likely to receive steroids.

Their lung microbiomes were disrupted, with more harmful bacteria like Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas. These bacteria were often detected before the pneumonia was diagnosed.

Primary CONCERN for the FUTURE : CO-INFECTION
